If LinkedIn had to explain you in one sentence, do you think it would get it right?
Most people would say yes. They’re posting consistently and showing up, but when you look closely, LinkedIn is often telling a very different story.
That’s the gap.
Your Profile is the clearest signal LinkedIn has to understand who you are and what you’re known for.
If your content feels like it’s not working, e.g., reach is inconsistent, engagement drops and results feel unpredictable, the typical response is to post more. But if LinkedIn doesn’t clearly understand you, more content won’t help. It just creates more mixed signals.
Because right now, your Profile is doing more of the heavy lifting than your posts.
This article is inspired by the recent episode of the Social Media for B2B Growth Podcast hosted by Michelle J Raymond, which discusses this topic in more detail.
The Shift Most People Haven’t Noticed
A lot has changed on LinkedIn over the past six months. Not one single update, but a combination of shifts pointing in the same direction. It’s no longer just focused on who you know, but more so on what you’re known for.
LinkedIn is working to connect people who consistently discuss specific topics with those who want to learn about them. This often includes people outside of your connections. What this means LinkedIn, AI tools and search systems are all trying to put you into a clear box.
They’re asking the same questions:
- Who is this person?
- What are they known for?
- Who should see their content?
- Are you an authority on this topic?
If your Profile isn’t giving a clear answer, LinkedIn will fill in the gaps itself.
Why Your Profile Is the Signal
Your posts are always changing:
- Different topics
- Different angles
- Often shaped by internal requests
That creates mixed signals, and LinkedIn doesn’t know what to do with that.
Your Profile is structured, consistent and far easier to read. Your posts show what you’re doing, but your Profile explains who you are and validates your credibility.
If those don’t match, you’re creating confusion.
Why Posting More Isn’t the Answer
When reach drops, doing more feels like the logical answer. More posts, more frequency, more effort. But if your Profile isn’t clear, you’re just amplifying the problem.
LinkedIn doesn’t know who to show your content to, and your audience doesn’t immediately understand why they should care. Clarity beats volume every time.
So, before you log in to LinkedIn to post again, take a step back and fix the foundation. Get clear on:
- Who you’re actually for
- What you’re known for
- Whether your profile and content are reinforcing the same idea
Because if those things aren’t aligned, more content won’t fix it.
The Part Most People Skip
Your experience, skills and work history matter more than ever.
LinkedIn and AI tools are reading them to understand whether you’re credible. They’re not just looking at what you say in your content; they’re checking whether your Profile backs it up.
If your Profile is vague or outdated, it weakens everything else you’re doing.
You’re not just talking about what you do; you need to show proof.
Final Thoughts
If LinkedIn can’t clearly understand what you do, it can’t confidently recommend you. Not in the feed. Not in search. Not to the right audience in the feed. And no amount of posting will fix that.
So before you create your next piece of content, take a step back and look at your Profile.
What would LinkedIn say you’re known for right now?
And more importantly, would you agree with it?
If the answer is no, that’s your work for this week.
